Our Most Recommended Books of All Time

Greetings from the snow-caked wastelands!!!

We’ve been spending our days snowed in thinking about all the book recommendations we’re missing out on by not being open. So, we chatted a bit during a meeting and came up with an idea (well, Courtney did) – to come up with our most recommended books overall. We each picked two books or series that we feel like we haven’t stopped recommending, even when the hype and newness had faded away.

Adam's Picks

Ring Shout by P. Djeli Clark

Ring Shout - This is my go to pick for someone looking to get out of a reading slump. It works every single time. No, seriously. Ring Shout treads a very thin line between fantasy, historical , horror, and literary fiction. I frequently refer to it as the best novella I’ve ever read.

Here’s the pitch: The KKK summons demons, who feed on hate and disguise themselves as clan members, at the showing of the film The Birth of a Nation. The story follows a group of Black women who hunt these demons and klan members in alternate jazz era America with swords and guns.

Lost Man's Lane by Scott Carson

The perfect recommendation for fans of classic 80s horror, thrillers, and generally anyone with a love or nostalgia for the 90s. I’ve never had a book I wish I could experience again for the first time to the same degree as Lost Man’s Lane. It encapsulates the idea of nostalgia for a time and place so completely, that it bleeds over into the feelings I have for the book itself.

Halli's Picks

Today, Tonight, Tomorrow by Rachel Lynn Solomon

Today, Tonight, Tomorrow is Halli’s all time favorite YA romance. The book takes place over the course of a single night. It has  a rivals to lovers storyline, has an incredibly nerdy but sweet MMC, and is the perfect book for anyone who has ever been in a transitional phase (aka everyone).

Book Lovers by Emily Henry

Halli is one of the biggest Emily Henry defenders I know. This is the anti-Hallmark movie romance where the career woman gets to keep her career annnnnd find love. It’s filled with bookish characters, witty banter, you don’t have to be a romance lover to love this book. Plus, I hear Halli mention on a weekly basis that she thinks Emily Henry writes some of the best spicy scenes in mainstream romance.

Dominic's Picks

Deephaven by Ethan M. Aldridge

Dom does most of his books in audio form, but he has such a soft spot for middle grade books. Deephaven has been a mainstay of his recommendations since it came out in Fall of 2023. With its release being only a month before we opened in our new spot, it’s safe to say that it has been his most recommended middle grade book since day one. It’s a quick little read and is perfect for anyone who likes a good magic school.

Bonus points for Aldridge’s illustrations!

Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt

Dom (and Courtney) love this one so much we have the cover on display as a poster in our front window. When it comes to general fiction, Dom loves a book with heart. There’s plenty of things in the world to bring us down, which makes feel-good reads like Remarkably Bright Creatures even more important.

Courtney's Picks

The Book of Goose by Yiyun Li

When I asked the team for their recommendations, I had no clue what Courtney would chime in with because the swath of things she could choose from is simply too wide. The Book of Goose is her go-to literary fiction choice. It’s genre-bending, with so many different appeals. It’s also short and easy to fall into and deeply character centric.

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

On the flipside – I also somehow knew that The Scholomance Series was likely to make the cut. I’ve heard Courtney’s pitch for this trilogy more than any other recommendation in the shop combined. A dark academia trilogy where the school is trying to actively kill the kids. It’s also a rare example of a genre series being short and easy to read and not an overwhelming undertaking. Full of found-family goodness, prickly/morally grey main character – and most importantly – it’s a completed series!
