Our Most Anticipated Spring 2025 Fantasy Book Releases

We read a lot of fantasy books around here at Underbrush and the best (or sometimes worst) part about the book industry is there is always something new to read. Well, we've combed through 100s of pages of fantasy book announcements and come up with a concise list of 10 that we're going to go absolutely feral for this spring.

Gifted & Talented by Olivie Blake (April 1, 2025)

Our favorite resident fantasy reader's favorite fantasy author has a new book coming out and she won't shut up about it, so we will let her take the mic on this one:

"Gifted & Talented brings the the sardonic prose that makes Olivie Blake one of the most distinctive voices is fantasy to a whole new story. Blake's depictions of the manipulative, cut-throat Wren family have a nuance and dark comedic brilliance that will endear readers of all genres. Gifted & Talented is Blake's best yet." – Courtney

PS: We have just a couple signed copies still available, so grab one while you can!

The Raven Scholar by Antonia Hodgson (April 15, 2025)

There's nothing better than a good competition-based fantasy and The Raven Scholar promises to be absolutely cutthroat. This book is full of betrayal, deceit, and the political intrigue to rival some of the best epic fantasies. We cannot wait for this one to hit shelves.

The Floating World by Axie Oh (April 29, 2025)

Sometimes fantasy books come along that give off the exact vibe of the Final Fantasy games of my (Adam) youth. So much about The Floating World feels like Final Fantasy 6 and X, with maybe a little bit of the Tales series mixed in.

Brighter Than Scale, Swifter Than Flame by Neon Yang (May 6, 2025)

A queer fantasy novella that packs a punch. Asian inspired, queer, dragons, armored warriors, and a morally conflicted MC – this book feels like it was made for us.

Modern Divination by Isa Agajanian (May 6, 2025)

We want to be the first to apologize to your May book buying budgets, because it's going to be an insane month for fantasy. We start off strong the first Tuesday in May with Modern Divination, which is a witchy, dark-academia fantasy that's been making waves in the UK and is FINALLY hitting the US market.

Courtney was lucky enough to get the very last ARC of this one and it's become one of her most prized possessions.

The Devils by Joe Abercrombie (May 13, 2025)

Adam was hyped about this one as soon it was announced because Abercrombie’s previous titles were so incredible. The surprise with The Devils came when Courtney read it first for consideration for our fantasy book club and dubbed it “possibly the best fantasy novel I’ve ever read".

The minute Courtney saw that one of the main comps on The Incandescent was the Scholomance Series by Naomi Novak, she knew this would be one our most anticipated for the whole damn year. Magical schools are our favorite sub-genre.
